Dr. Michael T. Acurio has been in private practice as an orthopedic surgeon at Orthopedic Specialists of Louisiana since 1991. Before his medical practice, Dr. Acurio completed undergraduate studies at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana; graduating Magna Cum Laude. He completed medical studies at Louisiana State University Medical School in Shreveport before serving an internship at LSUMC-S with rotations at Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, LSUMC-S, and Veteranís Administration Medical Center. His residency was completed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, with rotations at MUSC, Veterans Administration Medical Center, Roper Hospital, Charleston Memorial Hospital, Naval Hospital, and Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Greenville, South Carolina. Dr. Acurio is a Fellow with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons; and is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Professional memberships include the Shreveport Medical Society, Louisiana State Medical Society, American Medical Association, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, South Carolina Medical Society and Charleston County Medical Society. Additionally, he has been a contributing writer to several scientific orthopedic publications; presenting research information at Continuing Medical Education programs across the country.
Dr. Acurio has participated as an expert in thrombosis management and methods of preventing post-operative thrombosis for orthopedic surgery patients at national and international medical meetings. He also was one of the first physicians in this region to use cell implantation to replace damaged articular cartilage in injured knees
In addition to his busy medical practice, Dr. Acurio has five children, aged 6-24.
